Copy calculation with or without phantom

When copying a calculation of a semi-finished product, you can choose to not delete the part and leave it as a designation of the structure in the calculation; such a part line is called a 'phantom'. You can also choose to delete the part line, so that all components of the semi-finished product will be included in the calculation of the product (or semi-finished product).

Example

A furniture manufacturer manufactures various types of tables. For each of these tables, a set of fastening materials is required to attach the four legs to the tabletop: 4 bolts, 4 nuts, and 8 locking rings. On the Parts form, add this set of fastening materials as a semi-finished product with order code 'Phantom', to enable you to quickly add the set in the calculation of the tables.

The part calculations are as follows:

Fastening set

If you add the calculation of a table to a production file, you can do so using the 'Phantom' method or another method:

Calculation copied with phantom (do not delete line)

Calculation copied without phantom (delete line)

  • Leg x 4

  • Fastening set (phantom line)
  • Bolt x 4 (refers to phantom)
  • Nut x 4 (refers to phantom)
  • Locking ring x 8 (refers to phantom)
  • Leg x 4

  • Nut x 4
  • Locking ring x 8

Phantoms used in engineering

Phantoms can also be used in engineering, when a product is designed in 3D engineering layers, but is produced by performing a range of operations on feedstock. The various product phases are defined as phantom semi-finished articles on the Parts form. This way, you can visualize the product structure that is created as a result of the operations performed.
