Configuring protocols with the Configuration Manager
Click the Start button and in the left-hand pane click All Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, Configuration Tools and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
In the left-hand pane, open SQL Server Network Configuration and then click Protocols for MSSQLSERVER and then in the right-hand pane double click TCP/IP.
On the Protocol tab, point to Enabled and then click Yes to enable the TCP/IP protocol.
On the IP Addresses tab point to Enabled and then click Yes to enable the TCP/IP protocol IPv4. The result should be as shown below.
In some environments, the default static port cannot be used. If Dynamic ports are used, type 0 in the TCP Dynamic Ports field. Then click OK.
If another port is used, change the TCP Port field from 1433 to the required port number. Then click OK.
