The amount of a bank statement line may differ from the invoice amount, for example if you have sent a customer a $500 invoice subject to a 1% payment discount, and the customer therefore pays $495. In that case you can choose to post the payment difference to a differences account. When the invoice is paid, you can immediately enter the discount in the appropriate cash/bank day book:
The relevant postings are made when the bank statement is being processed. The invoice is marked as paid and $5 is posted to the Payment Differences account.
Tip: You are recommended to check for open items with payment differences on a regular basis. Process the differences by following the steps described above.
