Use the Capacity lines form to define the capacity of a capacity group. These capacity details are used for scheduling purposes.
Most capacity groups will have a standard capacity that varies over time. For example, it could be higher if temporary employees are hired, and it could be lower during holidays. The best way to define the capacity for a capacity group is therefore as follows:
First specify the standard capacity for a long period, and
Then register the capacity changes for days, weeks or months in which exceptions occur.
Example
For the entire year, specify a daily capacity of eight hours from Monday to Friday (the Selection type is 'Standard').
The company is closed from July 11 to July 29 (the Selection type is 'Delete'; the hours are automatically set to '0').
During the last two weeks of the year, Thursdays and Fridays have only four working days (the Selection type is 'Deviation'; set the hours to '-4').
Calculate capacity
Once you have specified the capacity lines, run the Calculate capacity process. Once this process has been run, the capacity of the capacity group has been defined for a particular date interval.
When the capacity of a capacity group changes, for example because you have purchased a new machine, change the existing capacity lines or add new lines. Run the Calculate capacity process again after you have made the changes. The subsequent planning will be calculated based on the new data.
Note: Before you can schedule operations, you need to specify the capacity for each capacity group and date interval. Then, you need to calculate this capacity. If the capacity for a capacity group has not been set, no planning can be made for the period in question.
This allows you to define the standard capacity for the period specified.
Delete:
This allows you to define the days on which no capacity is available at all, for example on holidays. These days will be ignored when scheduling operations.
Deviation:
This allows you to define any capacity that differs from the standard capacity during a particular period. In the field Hours per day, enter the number of hours by which the capacity differs from the standard capacity. If the number of hours is increased compared with the standard capacity (for example due to planned overtime), fill in a positive number. Fill in a negative number if the number of hours will be lower than the standard capacity.
The number of hours of capacity available per day in the period specified, or
The number of hours by which the standard capacity differs during this period For a capacity reduction, enter a negative number of hours.
In the Selection type field, specify the action to be performed on the number of hours specified. If the selection type is 'Delete', the hours per day are automatically set to '0'.
Zero capacity
The way in which zero capacity is handled depends on the reasons for this zero capacity occurring:
Zero capacity can occur if you have entered zero hours as the standard capacity, or if the standard capacity minus the deviation results in zero hours of capacity. In these cases, scheduling will still take place if you are using the infinite capacity method. Any resulting bottlenecks on those days will have to be resolved by the planner.
Zero capacity can occur if the capacity for a day or period has been set to zero using a capacity line of the 'Delete' type. In this case, the day or period has effectively been removed from the planning, and no orders can be scheduled for that day or period.
