If you are using part revisions, there is no need to define a new part for every new revision in your parts file. Instead, you can use the Revisions button to register the new version of the part in the part data. A revision may differ from other revisions in the following ways:
Calculation components
Stocks
Every part revision has a validity period (start date and finish date). The functionality depends on the Part revision management setting.
If you are using part revisions, but not formal revision management (the Part revision management check box is empty), you specify the start date when you enter a revision.
If you do use formal part revision management (the Part revision management check box is selected), the default start date is December 30, 9999. You enter the actual start date when you execute the Release part revision process.
The finish date of a revision is linked to, and immediately precedes, the start date of the next revision (Finish date = Start date of next revision – 1 millisecond).
If this check box is selected, the revision is interchangeable with its predecessor. This is an informational field.
Usage examples
If you want to copy a part (or part calculation), you can choose which part revision you want to copy. The current (the last released version) is used by default.
You can manage your stocks by revision. During the creation of purchase requirements, revisions are taken into account.
If you know that the calculation of a particular part will be renewed at some point in the future, you can already register that new revision now. When performing the calculation, you choose the revision you want to use. Calculation lines that are not valid in the selected revision are not displayed, unless you choose to select that revision.
It is possible to retrieve calculations of old and future revisions.
